Bonkers for bonsai

Bonsai are the cute old men of the plant world.
Pint-sized and wise; I just knew I had to snare a cool pic when I found this plant on show at Floriade in Canberra.
Trouble was, the light totally sucked.
Full sun blasted through the wooden pergola roof and striped the tiny trees with thick, horizontal hotspots … it was messy as. And I was time poor, touring round with my parents, wife, brother and his young family – there was no way we could come back later or wait for some cloud.
And there were other factors.
My niece was already pulling my sleeve asking if I could hurry up so she could go "put paint on a dwarf".
(To clarify, she wanted to know if we could go decorate a ceramic garden gnome … all the cool kids were doing it.)
So, keeping it quick, I underexposed the heck out of the bonsai and got my Dad to drop his fairy floss on the ground (10-second rule applied) and hold my flash while it popped the plant back up to nicer levels.
Few clicks later and we were off to paint Big Ears a new pink suit.
Like it? Or not?
Love to hear from you,
Ben.
